OUR FIRST YEAR

For you, our supporters, friends, and family, these pages describe the first year of the Gavin Bradford Donohue Foundation.
The fiscal year, quite arbitrarily, goes from November 1, 2007 to October 31, 2008.
Many thanks to all of you who made this first year a success: our individual and corporate sponsors, families of Drauden Point and Clarendon Hills schools, family and friends who traveled long distances to attend Donoroo 2008.

1st Year Highlights!

  • The Foundation Is Established As a Tax-Exempt Non-Profit Charitable Organization
  • 4 Major Fundraisers Held
  • $11,500 Is Granted to Our Beneficiaries

Fundraising Successes!

The first fundraiser was a miniature golf outing planned by students of Missouri Univ. of Science & Technology, many of Gavin's friends at school. The event was held in Rolla on April 4, 2008 and raised several hundred dollars. Originally scheduled for 2 weeks earlier, a cold, steady rain postponed it. The students persevered and pulled off a successful and fun event. Thank you MS&T students.

Drauden Point Middle School Talent Show on Friday, May 2, 2008, in Plainfield, Illinois raised over $2,221 for The Foundation. Read about it on page 4 of the Drauden Newsletter.Drauden Fundraiser

Clarendon Hills Middle School "Donoroo CHMS" Extravaganza on Friday, May 30, 2008 in Clarendon Hills, Illinois raised $2,584 for The Foundation and another $2,584 for the starving people of Darfur, Sudan.Donoroo at CHMS

"Donoroo 2008" on Saturday July 19, 2008 at The Pageant in University City, Missouri featuring 6 professional bands from Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois, raised over $4,200.Donoroo 2008: At The Pageant

Grants Awarded!

After long and often anxious hours of planning by many on raising funds for The Foundation,
the pleasure is in the awarding of grants according to the goals of the Foundation.
The Foundation disbursed nearly 80% of its net revenues as follows:

A $9,000 grant was made to Engineers Without Borders, Missouri University of Science & Technology . The occasion of the event was EWB's annual "Rice and Beans Dinner".Presentation of Grant to EWB.

A $1,000 grant was made to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Gateway Affiliate. MADD's victim advocate, April Barthelmass, was present during the entire criminal trial. April, whose brother, a Missouri state trooper, was killed by a drunk driver while on duty, has a heart of gold.

A $1,500 grant was made to St. Louis' Tower Grove Park , a National Historic Landmark. Gavin spent many happy hours in this park, not far from where he lived. A swamp white oak tree (sp. Quercus bicolor) was planted in Gavin's honor last year, along Arsenal St. side of the park. Visit the main office if you're ever in town and see a memorial plaque with Gavin's name and the exact location of the tree.

Our Second Year: What's In Our Future

Fundraising: We've learned that smaller events that are less costly upfront result in a more efficient return on our investment. So our major fundraiser, which will still have a musical theme, will likely be at a smaller venue. CHMS is planning Donoroo CHMS 2009 with The Foundation as one of the beneficiaries. And we hope to count on the individual support of you, The Family and Friends of The Foundation.

Beneficiaries: Our Mission Statement in creating the Foundation was to benefit the very worthy pursuits that Gavin was involved in when his young life was cut short. We've seen first-hand how powerful the work of EWB is and we would like to continue funding them. MADD, too, is in our future because of the very difficult and important services they provide to victim families. The goal of supporting the work and research into construction work zone safety and providing some level of music education to an underprivileged, but promising musician has not yet been achieved. Therefore, the Foundation would like to provide a grant this year to The Center for Work Zone Safety & Mobility (CWZSM) at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and to an as yet unknown musician. We hope you will continue to support us. Thank you.
